Austin Habitat for Humanity celebrated the completion of the first homes built as part of the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project, marking a milestone in a new east Austin neighborhood focused on affordability and sustainability.

Homeowners, volunteers and community leaders gathered Thursday at the Whisper Valley development to mark the achievement. The homes were built over the past six months by volunteers who traveled from across the country to participate in the project.

The completed homes are part of a effort to expand access to affordable housing in the growing Central Texas region. Organizers said construction will continue as more families prepare to move into the community.

The homes in Whisper Valley are designed with sustainability in mind, featuring energy-efficient construction intended to reduce long-term utility costs for homeowners.
