Born from a profound commitment to Habitat for Humanity’s mission and the well-being of communities everywhere, ReStores emerged as a beacon of change. It all began in 1991 with just five volunteers in Winnipeg, Manitoba, driven by a singular vision: to rescue new and used building materials from the brink of waste while advancing Habitat for Humanity’s mission of Home, Hope, and Community Building.

Drawing customers from far and wide, our ReStores offered irresistible discounts on everything from stylish home decor to gently used appliances, all while empowering individuals to beautify their homes and contribute to Habitat for Humanity’s noble cause. It was the dawn of something extraordinary.

Fast forward to 1992, and the inaugural US ReStore was proudly established right here in Austin, Texas – a city renowned for its vibrant eccentricity. Since then, Austin Habitat for Humanity ReStores has blossomed, now boasting three thriving brick-and-mortar stores and a bustling e-commerce platform, attracting an impressive 10,000 hits per month.

But our impact extends far beyond mere retail expansion. We’ve championed waste diversion and embraced the principles of the circular economy, leaving an indelible mark across the entire Central Texas region. To date, our ReStores have diverted over 40 million pounds of debris from landfills, a testament to our unwavering commitment to sustainability.

And in 2015, we took our dedication to new heights. Transforming a former pizzeria arcade into a state-of-the-art corporate office and ReStore operations space spanning — square feet, we earned a prestigious 4-star rating from Austin Energy Green Building. With a remarkable 96% usage of the original structure and a 260-kilowatt solar array powering 100% of our ReStore’s annual electricity consumption, we’ve set a new standard for sustainable excellence.
