In 2025, Austin Habitat for Humanity proudly hosted the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, one of the largest volunteer-driven build events in our organization’s history. Over the course of one transformative week, more than 1,700 volunteers came together to help construct 25 affordable homes, accelerating access to homeownership for Central Texas families.
As part of Habitat for Humanity’s global legacy, the Carter Work Project brought national attention to Austin’s affordable housing needs and the power of community-led solutions. The project also marked a major milestone in Austin Habitat’s expansion into Whisper Valley in Eastern Travis County, the nation’s first master-planned geothermal community, reinforcing our commitment to sustainable, energy-efficient homebuilding.
Through this historic effort, Austin Habitat strengthened partnerships, increased national visibility, and generated momentum to continue building stable, affordable housing across Central Texas.
The Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project is a global initiative that celebrates the extraordinary legacy President and Mrs. Carter built through Habitat for Humanity and their lifelong commitment to affordable housing. For nearly 40 years, the project has traveled across 14 countries, uniting thousands of volunteers, community leaders, public officials, and supporters to build homes and elevate the urgent need for safe, affordable homeownership around the world.
Through hands-on service and global visibility, the Carter Work Project has become one of Habitat for Humanity’s most impactful initiatives, inspiring communities to come together to create lasting change and housing stability for families.
The 2025 Carter Work Project brought together a dynamic group of celebrity and VIP supporters, including Drew and Jonathan Scott, Luci Baines Johnson, and Chip Carter, who joined volunteers on the build site. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson also took part in the week’s programming, helping elevate the importance of affordable housing across the city. The event featured appearances by Hook ’Em, the University of Texas mascot, with Ray Benson and Kiki Shepard serving as event emcees and live musical performances by Shakey Graves and Spoon. Austin-based artist Emily Eisenhart created the official commemorative poster, adding a unique local creative touch to this historic week of building and community impact.

Whisper Valley served as the official build site for the 2025 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, marking Austin Habitat for Humanity’s expansion into Eastern Travis County and the launch of large-scale construction in this innovative community.
Located between Tesla’s Gigafactory and Samsung’s $7 billion production facility, Whisper Valley is the nation’s first master-planned geothermal neighborhood. During the Carter Work Project, volunteers helped build energy-efficient homes equipped with geothermal heat pumps and solar panels, designed to produce more energy than they consume and achieve a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) score of 25.
Future homeowners will benefit from access to Signature Park, a 600-acre green space twice the size of Zilker Park, along with 26 miles of hike-and-bike trails, pocket parks, community centers, community gardens, neighborhood retail, and on-site elementary, middle, and high schools. The Whisper Valley development represents Austin Habitat’s commitment to sustainability, affordability, and long-term community investment.
A heartfelt thank you to the generous organizations and individuals who supported this historic event.
