Workplace Resource’s Dynamic Principle Virginia Visser Believes that Building a Strong Network and Supporting the Women Around You Is Essential

May 18, 2021

Q: What is your Austin Habitat and or Habitat for Humanity History of Involvement?

A: I actually have a long history of engagement with Habitat for Humanity, dating back to my teenage years.  My father has “skills” and a strong passion for volunteerism….championed volunteer days for our church and youth groups.  I have continued this legacy, spearheading volunteer build days with our employees and professional organizations I have been associated with over the years.\

Q: What advice did you receive when you were starting your career?

A: Always an interesting question….in some respects, the best advice I received was “no advice,”….meaning no perceived limitations or barriers were put in front of me, rather a willingness by mentors to let me jump in with both feet into unchartered territory.  So maybe that is the unspoken advice…have no fear!

Q: What do you wish you had known when you were starting your career?

A: I wish I had had a stronger awareness of the value of the personal network of relationships you develop throughout your career. It is easy to move to the next thing and lose touch.  There are many full-circle moments in life in which those relationships are invaluable.

Q: What does women empowerment mean to you?

A: Individuality, a personal self-worth that is created by choice vs. influence, expectation, or limitation.

Q: How do you empower women in our community?

A: In addition to employing, mentoring, and advancing women within my organization, I serve on the board of the American Heart Association.
