Austin Habitat for Humanity’s partner families represent eight countries of origin and in the past two years, more than 80% of our families were people of color. In addition, nearly two-thirds of our families are led by single mothers or other female heads of household.
Julia is a hardworking single mother of a teenage daughter looking to improve their life through homeownership. She works hard to support her daughter and mother every day. She has a full-time job as a Tax Specialist and gains extra income as a notary and Reiki master. With an Austin Habitat home, Julia feels her life will only get brighter. Having a home of her own has been a “bucket list” item for her, and she believes that being a homeowner will motivate her and her daughter to continue to grow and accomplish their life goals.
Darren, Dione, and their daughter are a close-knit family who has lived in Austin their entire lives. Darren and Dione believe this opportunity will change their lives forever. For the first time in her life, their daughter will have her own room with space to grow and her own safe space to play. Darren and Dione are excited to teach her responsibility throughout the process and show her what is necessary to own and maintain a home of her own one day. They believe an Austin Habitat home will help them build financial stability for their daughter’s future. They can save for her education and be the best parents they can be, with the stability and comfort that can only come from living in a home that is truly theirs.
Heather is a single mother who has spent many years of her life here in Austin. She is passionate about paying it forward as she works at a local nonprofit, training up-and-coming social workers full time, and works part-time at another local nonprofit, helping people receive access to nutrient-dense foods. Heather is dreaming of a space that is truly her own. She envisions her new Austin Habitat home as a sanctuary where she can mute the outside world’s noise to rest and rejuvenate with her son. They are excited about the yard and have goals of walking outside to her garden to pick what they will use for dinner. In addition, Heather is excited to have space for guests to come over and entertain. Her son can’t wait to have friends over to play.
Tasha is an intelligent, passionate single mother to two children, born and raised in San Marcos. She lives a hectic and productive life raising her two kids, teaching AVID classes, coaching Volleyball and Basketball teams, teaching Adult Education classes at night, and returning to further her education in a Master’s Program. Without the constant energy spent worrying about where they will live next and how they can afford it, Tasha wants to focus on being an even better mother, teacher, and coach. She believes that having a home of their own will provide the family with stability that will significantly impact their lives and change the trajectory of their futures.
David & Camelia are parents and caregivers of David’s aging parents. Currently living with a multi-generational household in a small apartment, they look forward to the space a new home will provide. For the first time, their son will have his own room. Camelia is excited to have more space in the kitchen, as she loves to cook. David is excited to provide this opportunity for their son to grow and flourish. In addition, their son has been begging for a dog, and David has promised his son that they can add a dog to the family because they will have a spacious home and backyard. David and Camelia believe this new home will bring them peace and tranquility as they finally have a place to call their own in this country.
Originally from Mexico, Jose and Victoria came to Austin in search of better employment opportunities. Jose hopes to advance in his career and get a higher paying salary to provide more for his family. Victoria is passionate about cooking and has dreams of being a chef and opening her own restaurant one day. They both want the best for their children, to receive an education, get jobs and find careers they are happy with. They see their new Austin Habitat home as a chance to create stability in their lives.
As a one-income household raising five children, Aida works diligently to provide for her family. Aida’s children are her everything, and she believes an Austin Habitat home will be a rock for her family, somewhere they can always return and know they will be welcome. She looks forward to creating a space with enough space to celebrate the holidays and birthdays or have friends over for a game night. She is excited about all the memories her family will make together in a place that will be truly their own.
