Meet Our Spring 2022 Families

Austin Habitat for Humanity’s partner families represent eight countries of origin and in the past two years, more than 80% of our families were people of color. In addition, nearly two-thirds of our families are led by single mothers or other female heads of household.

Maria

Maria is a hardworking single mother looking for a permanent home for her family. She and her son currently reside in Del Valle in an older RV with little space, pests, and long commutes to work and school. Family means everything to Maria and a Habitat home means space to take in her aging parents. She knows the quality of their lives will improve drastically with their new space. Maria says “This is more than just somewhere to live. It is somewhere to build our lives and give my son, myself and my parents that peace and sense of community. It is a dream come true.”

Charles & Whitney

Charles & Whitney are Austin residents excited to start a new chapter of their lives in San Marcos with their three children. They love Austin for its access to nature and for the large Deaf community that Charles is a part of. However they are excited to discover all of the things that make San Marcos special. A new home in San Marcos will offer their family privacy and safe place with a yard for both their children and pets to play. They cannot wait to have space to be able to fellowship and enjoy the Lord with all their brothers and sisters in Christ. They are a family led by Christ and they are so grateful to the Lord for the opportunity of homeownership.

Regina

Regina, originally from New Orleans, moved to Texas in search of a better life for her children. She works hard helping others as a Home Health Aide and loves giving back through her work. Unfortunately Regina does not make enough to afford the skyrocketing home prices in Austin. She believes that owning a home will allow her to be a better example for her children. She wants to show them that homeownership is possible and that they can do anything they set their minds to. This is an answer to her prayers and thinks it will help improve her confidence. Regina is excited to meet the volunteers and become great friends with her neighbors.

Fernando & Laura

Fernando & Laura are native Austinites who raised their family on the East side. They watched their neighborhood change and sadly said goodbye to loved ones who were forced out by rising rent prices, as a result of gentrification. Every day they worry about their landlord knocking on their door telling them the house is being sold, something they experienced before. Laura & Fernando are ready to exchange a life of constant stress and worry to one of opportunity and hope. They are excited to have a home of their own in Austin. They can’t wait to have a yard for their grandson to play in and for their family to finally be together under one roof.

Bonnie & Marilyn

Bonnie & Marilyn have struggled with their housing situation in the past, facing discrimination against people with disabilities, lawsuits, living in unsafe areas and harassment. Ready to put these challenges behind them they reached out to Austin Habitat for assistance. They are most excited about having a yard where they can BBQ, watch the birds, and to live a less stressful life knowing that they are safe in their new home. Bonnie knows that she can never repay the volunteers, sponsors, and donors involved in building her home, however she is dedicated to paying it forward by helping students at Texas School of the Deaf.

Floriberto & Edna

Floriberto & Edna are new parents currently living in a home with eight of their family members leaving them with little privacy. They constantly worry about the disruption their young son might cause. They want a stable place for their son to always call home. A place where he can grow up in a safe community and make neighborhood friends to grow up with. Floriberto & Edna have big plans for their future after they become homeowners. With the financial stability they will gain by building equity in their home, Floriberto wants to receive his CDL to become a truck driver. Edna wants to become a registered nurse which Floriberto’s mother inspired her to do.

Carlos & Laura

Carlos and Laura moved from Mexico to Austin to create a better life for their son however their current living situation is stressful and unsafe. The family lives together in a one-bedroom apartment in a dangerous neighborhood. Their son suffers from severe asthma and allergies which are triggered by his home environment. With their new Habitat home, Carlos plans to improve their financial stability through a higher paying job and increased savings. Laura’s major goal for the future is to help her son become and stay healthy. His doctor is confident that his asthma and allergies will begin to improve in their new home without the irritations from the previous apartment. The couple is looking forward to a better quality of life and a place their son can grow up happy and healthy.

Betsy

Betsy is a single mother who is inspired and motivated to improve life for her son. She loves Austin and wants this to be the place for her son to grow. However the process of finding a safe, stable place to live has become more disheartening and discouraging for Betsy, as she searched for a new apartment every year and stayed with family when she needed to. Now Betsy is looking forward to the new opportunities a home will bring for her and her son. She believes it will relieve the stress and anxiety of constantly worrying over high rent and where they will have to move next. It will provide them with stability and a place to plant their roots as a family. She pictures herself having bonfires and projector movie nights in the yard, with space for her cat to roam and her son to play.
