Mary feels at home in Austin – after all, she’s lived here her whole life! This hardworking mom loves living in Austin and being surrounded by her friends and family, and she has become the leader of a multigenerational family unit that not only includes her children, but also her parents. She has stepped gracefully into this provider role but also recognizes that the cost of living in the area is holding her family back from fulfilling all of their dreams and aspirations.
Mary has been a customer-service representative for TXTag for more than four years, and despite her hard work, she has not been able to afford more than a small apartment for herself, her two children and her aging parents. The family currently lives in a small apartment originally rented by Mary’s parents several years ago, dealing with cramped conditions, high rent and no outdoor access for her kids. Mary is particularly focused on a wellness-enhancing home for her family because her 11-year-old son recently survived a battle with cancer and still requires frequent doctor visits.
Mary heard about Austin Habitat from a coworker and took the initiative to work on her credit so she could qualify. She was so happy to be accepted into the program that she burst into happy tears, and she has been incredibly excited about this opportunity for her family ever since. She’s looking forward to being able to provide each member of the family with their own space, and to giving back to her parents, who were not able to afford their own home when she was growing up.
For now, Mary is enjoying the sweat equity process and getting to know her future neighbors, and looks forward to working on her home. She thanks Austin Habitat and all of the Build for Unity sponsors for their good hearts in supporting her dreams of home, and is thankful to these supporters for bringing light and hope into her life!
Mary and her family moved into their home in March of 2020.
