Liliana & Anyelo’s Story
Liliana and Anyelo Valerio came to Austin on different paths: she’s lived here almost her entire life and he came here from the Dominican Republic eight years ago. They are now a family, working hard to build the best possible life for themselves and their two young children. They love Austin and they know they want to stay here, but their housing situation is holding them back.
Liliana has worked as a pharmacy tech at HEB for nine years and Anyelo works as a cook, but despite their stable employment and ongoing hard work, the family continues to struggle with the high costs of living in Austin. Right now, this family of four is living in a one-bedroom apartment where their seven-year-old son has to sleep in the living room. The apartment borders the highway, so there is constant noise and pollution, and nowhere for the family to access fresh air or play outside.
Liliana and Anyelo realize that their housing situation isn’t good for their young family, but they never believed they could afford their own home. Liliana had heard of Habitat for Humanity, and had even contacted us years ago, but she wasn’t ready to move forward. Now, however, she has worked to pay down debts and is improving her financial health even further with help from our team. The family is very excited to have qualified for a home of their own!
Liliana, who has always lived in rental apartments, is grateful to Austin Habitat for helping her provide a life for her children that she never had growing up. She’s thrilled that her kids will have their own space! The family is eager to get started building their home and excited for the opportunity to help build for their new neighbors as well. Liliana expressed to us that she is so thankful for Austin Habitat and the sponsors of her home, and wanted everyone to know how meaningful this experience has been to her and her family.
Liliana and her family moved into their home in March of 2020.
